In addition to his clinical work, he has been extensively involved in teaching ultrasound techniques to other physicians and conducting research in this area.
Dr. MacKay began his practice in Sioux Lookout, Ontario, where he served a geographic area the size of France and over 30 fly-in First Nations communities. His practice was characterized by a unique blend of sports medicine, emergency medicine, and point-of-care ultrasound, particularly in a low-resource setting that required practical and effective treatment solutions. In his current practice, Dr. MacKay focuses on helping athletes of all ages and levels prevent and recover from injuries. He offers expert guidance on rehabilitation and return-to-play strategies and provides procedures such as steroid injections, viscosupplementation, trigger point injections, barbotage, needle tenotomy, hydrodilatation, nerve blocks, and PRP when needed. Dr. MacKay has extensive experience in sports medicine, having provided medical coverage for junior hockey, varsity soccer, football, professional curling, lacrosse, volleyball, dance, mixed martial arts, and as part of the medical team for the Canada Games. With a personal background in endurance sports, including triathlon, road cycling, mountain biking, and cross-country skiing, Dr. MacKay continues to stay active in these pursuits. However, he’s found that nothing quite prepares you for the endurance challenge of keeping up with young children—a test of stamina he gladly embraces every day!
